    Why were there even button men? Couldn’t a computer script handle this and avoid traumatizing a pair of men? And reduce the risk of a meltdown?

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 16 часов назад

      We have to weigh up the scenarios between human error versus automated error. Sure, a simple automated program could do all the work without the need for human supervision. However, all it would take is the computer program to blip a little bit and the world would end. That would have been too risky. At least the two man team could double check and support one another. One person fails to push the button, the other person can correct. We see that happen in the show several times. If The Swan were built today, it would probably use an automated system *and* human supervision to make sure the time horizons were met and any blips could be quickly identified then rectified. Back in the late 70s, computers were not as reliable as they are today and the technology could not be solely relied upon to do the job. It was safer having rotating teams of button pushers back then. When the time came to upgrade such an analogue system, DHARMA had been wiped out.

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108That terminal is basically an Apple II digital computer. The days of unreliable analog computers were basically over. Radzinsky knew what he was doing too, as far as technology goes.. it strikes me as very odd that there was no script to at least serve as a backup. I suppose it would be too inconvenient to the plot

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 16 часов назад

      Apple II's had many, many bugs and problems, especially the first generations. A quick google lists the various drawbacks of the technology from the time. The point still stands that DHARMA could not rely upon a computer from 1977 to be fully automated without there being issues. Also, Radzinsky built a closed system that he had full control over because he was a paranoid control freak and his goal was to study the properties and effects of the electromagnetism as much as it was to contain it. He could have programmed a back-up script in the early days, but that would still have needed upkeep/refreshing as the years went on. After he died, there would have been no one left with the knowledge base to do that down there. And still, even with a back-up script in place, all it would take is for a power outage or a generator failure to kill or reset the whole system. Automation remains unreliable in this context. So, I don't think this is about plot inconvenience. The plot logic here is sound. This is more about modern viewers used to modern technology looking back at old technology and holding it to the same standards of reliability. Even in 2005 (when The Swan was first introduced to us) computing technology wasn't anywhere as reliable as it is right now. I wouldn't trust any computer that was tasked with preventing the world from ending to rely on automation or some back-up script. I want human beings monitoring it 24/7.

    • @CHURCHISAWESUM
      @CHURCHISAWESUM 7 часов назад

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108true, I would want that even today. Fair enough. I guess I wasn’t thinking about the stakes of the button since the key backup renders the whole thing inert, but they weren’t sure that would work or if it would kill the guy turning the key. So with those stakes in mind I suppose you’d park two bozos down there and hope they don’t kill each other 😂

      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thank you😊 At the end of season four, how did Jin go from the freighter into the island's "time bubble,"but the helicopter did not? Even though it was in closer proximity to the island bubble.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 23 часа назад

      Ah yes! I did respond to your comment about this on the other video. Here it is in case you didn't get the notification: Basically, the freighter is within The Island's radius, which is why Sawyer and Juliet can see it on the horizon. When it blows up, Jin is propelled into the water. The Island moves and everything within that radius that is either touching water or land moves with it, including Hydra Island and The Looking Glass Station. And the freighter wreckage moves to the new location too. However, we find out that our Island Losties move backwards through time at this precise jump point. And only predestined time travellers move with that flash, i.e. Faraday’s group on the zodiac raft and Jin floating on debris between Hydra and the main shoreline. They all travel with the light flash because they are needed in the past. This is the reason why Sawyer and Juliet no longer see the smoke on the horizon. It wasn't because the freighter wasn't within the bubble, it was. It's just been left behind in the present day with Richard Alpert and The Others (wherever they moved to in the world). The helicopter doesn't travel with either space or time jumps because they are in the air, not on the ground or the water. And also because they won't be needed in the past for another three years. Hope that clarifies it a little bit.

    You should make a video on the theory that Kate was pregnant by Jack on the second flight to the island and that David (in the flash sideways/ purgatory) is actually Jack and Kate's son and not a construct of Jack's mind to work through his daddy issues. The second time they flew out to the island, Eloise said that they should recreate events of the first flight on Oceanic ... And indeed most of them were recreated, like there was a coffin on the plane, a prisoner, someone with a guitar, a married woman, and what's left? A pregnant woman! And that's Kate.... I read this theory a lot and someone very smartly pointed out the recreation of events... And apparently Kate's pregnancy and David being her and Jack's son was confirmed by an executive product on Twitter and by Eva. Lilly herself on Instagram? Would love to hear your take on this... I need to know if there is any trurh to this so I can rest lol Thanks

    Yet another great video! Thank you, I’ve been watching these obsessively the past few weeks. I find the topic of who buried Henry interesting. I had always assumed Ben buried him after killing him. This seems logical, as it allows him to claim Henry’s identity and say he buried his (Henry’s) wife should he ever need a cover story. After all, why would Alex or Carl put a cross? There’s no indication any of The Others are Christian. The only likely non-815 Christians on the island would be Desmond, Kelvin, or Danielle, and I agree they seem unlikely. Just my 2 cents. Thanks again, and stay LOST.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 День назад

      Really pleased you are enjoying the videos! Do we think Ben would go to the trouble of digging a hole then burying Gale's body and then making a cross though? Just seems out-of-character for him. He is hardly the most compassionate man, especially when it comes to potential agents of Widmore. He literally left his own father's body to rot in a van up on the mesa and the bodies of his entire DHARMA family in an open pit. So, why would he bury a total stranger/potential enemy like Gale and give him a tidy headstone? I always viewed the cross less as a Christian symbol and more as a non-denominational marker of respect, just like at the Oceanic beach camp graveyard. To me, the only reason to give someone a gravestone marker like that would be out of compassion or guilt rather than any religious reason. The only characters among The Others that made sense to me would have been Alex and/or Karl. They are simply copying what they think normal society does with the dead.

    • @mikejabbur508
      @mikejabbur508 22 часа назад

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thanks for responding! Yes, I do think Ben would go to the trouble to bury the body and make a cross. It’s actually not a very deep grave or elaborate cross, and the cross at the end would only take minutes to construct. But I don’t think he did so out of compassion for Henry. To the contrary, I think he did so to support a cover story he may need in the future…that he is Henry Gale, and that he buried his dead wife. (Remember, Ben, “always has a plan.”) I agree that he didn’t intend to be captured by Danielle, but I think any time Ben sees a scenario play out on the island, he thinks ahead as to how he’ll twist it to his advantage down the line. I also think LOST is all about symbols, and the cross is definitely a Christian symbol. It makes sense that the “Losties” would use basic crosses for their grave markers b/c they’re a predominantly white Christian group who would likely see a cross as you describe it (a non-denominational marker of respect). But as an atheist, I can’t see a cross that way-especially on LOST, where symbols all have such significant meaning. And we know The Others don’t mark graves with crosses-even of their own…they burn their bodies. And we have no reason to believe Danielle and/or Karl are dabbling in Christianity. It could be part of their rebellion against Ben, but that would need to be supported with a scene showing Danielle hiding a cross she wears, or hiding a bible in her room, or something like this. Instead, we know The Others are a group, most of whom don’t have/maintain contact with the outside world, who have their own deity figure-Jacob. And I don’t see Jacob’s followers marking graves with crosses. I think it makes a lot more sense that Ben would anticipate a scenario where he might use Henry Gale’s identity as a cover in the future, and all anyone would need to see to believe he’s telling the truth is the balloon and the grave, and his whole story would lock into place. As you say in the video, who would expect someone to dig up the grave? Ben’s clever, and there’s no way he would have left the unburied body out there knowing he might want to create an alternate identity at some point. Adding a simple cross at the end would take 5 minutes and go a long way to support his possible identity theft. It’s 0% compassion and 100% strategy. Anyway, that remains my read. :) Stay LOST!

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thank you! I always imagined Ben “stumbling upon” Henry (maybe he saw the umbrella overhead before it crashed, as with 815, and he/The Others tracked it down. Or maybe the island guided him to it to trigger a series of events), presenting himself as a fellow crash survivor of some sort, seeming friendly to get Henry’s backstory out of him, then murdering Henry a la “Jeremy Bentham” once he learned what he wanted to know. But after watching your video and being blown away by the fact that the umbrella was marked “Widmore Industries,” I now think there would have been a violent interrogation, much like Sayid would soon put Ben through at The Swan station, to learn of any possible involvement from Widmore himself. Of course, Henry could never convince Ben he is innocent and good, and so he’d be murdered regardless. Thanks for humoring me!

      I think you've taken this too literally. Faraday is our resident scientist on the show, so I just used him as a representative of "science" when contrasting it against Mother's "faith" explanation of the light. I could have used Pierre Chang or Stuart Radzinsky, but Faraday was a main character so it seemed more appropriate to designate it to him. I'm not saying real world physicists would explain this crazy ass magical light lore lol. Being a scientist in a sci-fi show is different to being a scientist in the real world because there is a level of fantastical possibility within genre stories that we simply don’t experience in our own reality. For instance, we know that a DeLorean cannot be rigged to go back in time and that such a concept is total fiction yet that doesn’t make Doc Brown any less of a scientist in the story of Back to the Future, does it? And it doesn’t make his explanations of how the DeLorean operates any less “scientific” within his fictional scientific world. And so it goes for LOST, which has its own scientific world and internal logic and set of rules. Faraday is a physicist - a literal man of science - yet he has an explanation for what this magical light beneath The Island is; a magical light that we know does not exist in our real world. Yet Faraday doesn’t look at the light as being magic or some kind of proof of the divine. He understands it as electromagnetic energy and exotic matter. Because in the universe of LOST there are these scientific understandings of the magical/miraculous. The same goes for how Faraday would have viewed the smoke monster if he had gotten the opportunity to study it. In the real world, we know smoke monsters and immortal island protectors don’t exist and are total fantasy, but in LOST they do exist and therefore have a “scientific” explanation within the lore and lexicon of the show. So that’s what I’m talking about in the videos.

    Really interesting but you missed something. That stupid jughead hydrogen bomb was buried under where the dharma initiative houses were built. Pregnant women and longterm exposure (like Ben living there) put him under active radiation for decades - he grew up there. That was all on the second Island, not the magical island. That’s what caused Ben’s tumor and fetal deaths on that island. They were all living above a nuclear weapon.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 День назад

      I get into Jughead in a different video. There are a few points of confusion and conflation you have made there. Jughead was not buried directly beneath the barracks. It was in an old Egyptian underground chamber which was part of a tunnel network system. They had to travel from the chamber via the tunnels to the barracks then break through the wall of a basement. Ben's cancer was not the result of the bomb. Eloise and Richard were exposed much closer to Jughead and they never got cancer. In fact, people don't get cancer on The Island, they are cured from it like with Rose. It was an anomaly that Ben got cancer, which is why everyone was worried, because The Island was sending a sign to The Others that it no longer wanted him in charge. Ben surmises as much in Season Four 'Cabin Fever'. The pregnancy crisis was the result of The Incident and the electromagnetic fallout, not Jughead. The Epilogue to the series explains this pretty well. Basically, the pockets of light beneath The Island are harmful to early term gestation and after The Incident, there was now a button discharging that energy into the atmosphere every 108 minutes. As for your reference to this all taking place on the second smaller island -- known as Hydra Island. None of the above took place there. Jughead is on the main island, as are the barracks, as is The Swan site. It all happens there. I would advise you to keep watching the videos as they clarify many of these points.

      I don't think the theory of evolution is incompatible with the theories about how all life on Earth began. The idea is that the origin of all life goes back to "the primordial soup", which contained the building blocks for life. Single celled organisms formed and that early life evolved over millennia and sprouted various species, including us. It's a theory, of course, no one really knows for sure how life began. There are various interpretations out there, some of which are spiritual or creationist in nature while others are secularist. LOST leaves enough ambiguity that we can view The Source via a creationist or a secularist lens. It just depends on your angle of approach.

      @@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I say we come from mud. But then again, where did the mud come from? Where did the "primordial soup" come from? Either we are in a butterfly's dream or we are not. I don't think we can afford ambiquity.

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 День назад

      Heterotrophic theory speculates that "the primitive Earth's surface layers, carbon, hydrogen, water vapour, and ammonia reacted to form the first organic compounds" and that created the primordial soup. All the ingredients for life came from that, or so the speculation goes. Again, it's just a theory, one of many. The truth is we can never know for sure; ambiguity is part of our existence. The never truly knowing comes with being alive. And I think acknowledging the fact that none of us actually know for sure about the origins of the universe and life on Earth is quite humbling. I don't plant my flag in the sand but I remain open to the possibilities.

    I was just wondering since I dont remember very well eveything, when Sawyer & Co go back in time and they merge with the Dharma, Sawyer start talking with Richard, but did he ever meet him before that moment? and if not how did he knew who he was? and he start talking about how he's waiting for john locke to came back, how did he knew this?

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 4 дня назад

      I believe that is their first scene together but it's worth remembering that Juliet has been with Sawyer's group the whole time (she is in the house with Sawyer when Richard shows up at the barracks). We see her telling the Oceanic survivors about The Others at various points, including specifically mentioning Richard to Locke. So, we can assume Sawyer learned about Richard from her too. Sawyer says to Richard the following: "I also know that 20 years ago, some bald fella limped into your camp and fed you some mumbo jumbo about being your leader. And then poof... he went and disappeared right in front of ya. Any of this ringin' a bell? That man's name is John Locke, and I'm waitin' for him to come back." Sawyer was saying that he himself is waiting for Locke to come back, not that he thinks Richard is waiting for Locke. He only references events that he is aware of having taken place in some form.

    Hey man, loving these videos! Question, did you use an AI voice for some of your earlier videos? I'm rewatching them all and noticed a massive different in voice

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 4 дня назад

      Yes, that's correct. I didn’t have recording equipment back when the older videos were made so I used a text-to-speech voice. But as the channel grew, so too did the calls for me to get a mic and use my real voice. So, I did just that and remade all of the old videos using my own voice and better quality footage from the show, adding more detail and information as well. The Theory of Everything six-part series contains everything that was touched upon in those earlier, shorter videos.

    I'm about 30 minutes in, so these questions may be answered later on in the video, but I wanted to jot them down here in case I forget later. 1. Does there always need to be a smoke monster of sorts? Will Hurley inevitably have to deal with one so that there is balance? 2. What about Jacob's death made it to where the monster was stuck as Locke?

    20 years later... One thing is clear... The island isn't done with us yet... We have to go back! In all seriousness, I love intricate content like this that dives deep into the lore of not only this show, but oddly ourselves too... That's the beauty of this show... We connect with the characters because of their struggles and their journey in mending those struggles and we just have to believe in taking the right path and continue to better ourselves and learn to let go at the same time... That is why they call it a leap of faith.

      They viewed the smoke monster as a separate entity to whatever forms the Man in Black took, just as we did for most of the show until we learned that the smoke monster and many of the ghostly apparitions of people were one in the same.

    Hey, I’ve watched most of your videos and haven’t really seen this spoken about but maybe I’ve missed it. I was just wondering, do you know how they decided who would survive the island? So Kate, Sawyer etc. It’s always seemed really odd to me that they got to survive, but Jin and Sun didn’t

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 7 дней назад

      They always knew that Jack would survive until the last scene and the show would end with his death. I think they also always planned for Locke to eventually meet his demise and that to be the turning point in the show. But as for other characters who died and those who survived to the end, it was mostly down to what the writers felt worked best for the story/audience at the time. If we were to break down the logic behind those final choices... Jin and Sun's deaths were designed to help contextualise just how dangerous the Man in Black was to the group and to give us extra reason to hate him as the arch villain. We needed a tragic set of main characters deaths to help do that. I think Kate couldn't die because Jack's final fate was never in doubt, so the woman he loved had to live on so he could have a victory/comfort in his final moments. Whereas Sawyer and Hurley were both too wildly popular to kill off -- I think they knew that killing off the fan favourites would have left a bitter aftertaste. However, we could tinker with the show in our heads to come up with an alternative set of survivors. Example: Sawyer dies in the finale in a moment that redeems his actions on the submarine, while Jin survives the sub to go back to raise Ji Yeon.

    If Dogen's test on Sayid was to see if he was a smoke monster, why did he say Sayid failed?

    • @LOSTEXPLAINED108
      @LOSTEXPLAINED108 10 дней назад

      I would suggest one of two possibilities: 1. Literal infection. The spring was tainted with smoke monster juju. Basically, now Jacob was dead, the Man in Black could pollute his sacred spaces by spreading pieces of himself in the water. While Sayid wasn’t a smoke monster manifestation, Dogen believed he was still infected with this smoke monster essence in some way, making him easily influenced by MiB. Dogen never explains how he has come to this determination/diagnosis but it’s possible that the electroshock part of the test that he administers wasn’t actually set to a very high charge and, had a person without any infection been strapped down and shocked, it would have barely registered as pain at all. But the smoke monster is more sensitive to electromagnetic fields and sonic frequencies, therefore those he has tarnished with his essence will be more sensitive too. Dogen sees the amount of pain it causes Sayid, when really it should be nothing more than a static tickle. 2. Metaphorical infection. If you view the infection as being less literal then Dogen was left unsatisfied by the test results. Because while they confirmed that Sayid wasn’t a smoke monster manifestation, it did not answer the main question: how did Sayid come back to life? The waters of the temple are tainted. They shouldn’t work anymore. The Temple Others have never seen someone come back from the dead like this before who wasn’t in some way connected to the Man in Black. But Dogen has a very muddled view on the infection. He believes it is incurable. However, we later see that it can be resisted and reversed, purely through a person’s own will, perhaps helped by connecting with emotional ties to their humanity - Claire making peace with Kate, Sayid being reminded of his past love by Desmond, etc. MiB’s infection could be simply viewed as him manipulating and deceiving people into darkness. I like both of these interpretations, maybe it’s possible to blend them together into a hybrid answer. MiB infects the spring literally, which can enter a person’s wounds, but his hold over people is not unbreakable. Like most viruses, it can be treated and cured.
